Chennai, Oct 27 – Tamil Nadu’s new state government has lifted the amount of paddy the government buys from farmers to almost double what the previous administration did.
The official figures show the government bought 170 45 545 tonnes of paddy from 2021 to 2025, an average of about 42.6 million tonnes a year. The earlier government, during 2016‑21, purchased 113 51 469 tonnes – an average of roughly 22.7 million tonnes. That’s a jump of nearly 19.9 million tonnes.
Officials say the rise comes from better planning and more efficient operations. The new procurement season now starts on Sept 1, a month earlier than the old Oct 1 start.
By Oct 24, the state had opened 1,853 Direct Procurement Centres (DPCs). Those centres have already bought 10.4 million tonnes of paddy. Trains moved 8.77 million tonnes to districts, while the rest is stored at the procurement sites. Each DPC handles around 1,000 bags a day, and many keep working until 8 p.m. Some even operate on Sundays. For example, on Oct 19 alone, 5,510 tonnes were bought.
The early start and extended hours help farmers get paid on time and reduce stress during the harvest peak. The government also supplied 2.65 crore gunny bags and over 28,000 tarpaulins to keep the crop secure.
Logistics are packed: 4,000 lorries and 13‑15 trains move about 35,000 tonnes of paddy daily. Since Oct 21, 100 extra load workers have joined the effort. The Food and Civil Supplies Department says it keeps constant tabs on procurement, storage and transport so farmers and buyers know the process is running smoothly.
