Mumbai – PayPal has teamed up with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) to add India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to its new global platform, PayPal World. The move was announced at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai on Tuesday and marks the first time UPI will run on a worldwide payment hub.
What does this mean for users?
- Indian shoppers can now use UPI to pay for millions of items on sites that accept PayPal, eliminating extra steps for card or bank transfers.
- International visitors in India can tap their PayPal wallet and complete payments through UPI, making travel expenses hassle‑free.
PayPal World is built to bring together popular payment systems and digital wallets from around the world on one open‑commerce platform. Using secure, cloud‑native APIs, the system promises fast, reliable, and tech‑agnostic transactions that work on all devices.
Alex Chriss, PayPal’s President & CEO, called the partnership a “landmark moment.” He said, “By integrating UPI into PayPal World, we connect one of the world’s most widely used domestic systems to a truly global digital wallet. This collaboration shows our shared commitment to a more inclusive digital economy—and it unlocks new opportunities for India’s small businesses and simplifies travel payments worldwide.”
Ritesh Shukla, Managing Director & CEO of NPCI International, highlighted the broader vision: “Bringing UPI into a global platform aligns with our goal of making international payments easier, safer, and more accessible. It will benefit Indian customers shopping abroad and help global merchants tap a fast‑growing UPI user base.”
With UPI now live on PayPal World, India’s digital payment network is set to cross borders more smoothly, offering customers worldwide a familiar and trusted way to pay online.
