PhonePe has teamed up with Mastercard to launch device tokenisation on its payment gateway, a move that promises faster, safer digital payments for millions of users. The partnership was announced during the Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai, highlighting the company’s push to make shopping online as simple as a tap.

What does device tokenisation actually do? “When you save a card once in the PhonePe app, you can use it across any merchant without re‑entering your details,” explains Ankit Gaur, Head of PhonePe Payments Gateway. The new system replaces a physical card number with a unique token that protects card data, letting users check out with a single click.

Alongside tokenisation, PhonePe unveiled the Smart Pod – an all‑in‑one device that combines a card terminal with its smart speaker. “The Smart Pod accepts both card and UPI payments from the same terminal, making it ideal for small shops,” says Sayem Ahsan, Head of Devices for Merchant Business. The gadget turns any storefront into a modern payment hub, expanding the reach of digital commerce.

The collaboration with Mastercard brings global security standards to PhonePe’s merchant platform. Already, leading travel app ixigo has integrated PhonePe’s tokenised payments, giving users faster and more secure checkout for flight, bus and train bookings. The partnership turns “saved cards” from a single‑merchant feature into a network‑wide capability, creating a unified checkout experience across India’s growing e‑commerce ecosystem.

Customers benefit from a truly one‑click checkout that uses biometric authentication—fingerprint or face scan—thanks to recent RBI regulations. Instead of typing OTPs, users can verify payments directly from their device. For merchants, the result is fewer abandoned carts and higher conversion rates. Together, PhonePe and Mastercard are simplifying online shopping while keeping security at the forefront.
