PIB Fact Check flags AI-manipulated video of Finance Minister promoting fake investment scheme
In a warning issued on Monday, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact‑checked a viral video that had circulated on Facebook and other social media.
The clip showed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman supposedly promoting an “investment program” that promised ₹60,000 in one day and ₹10 lakh every month.
PIB says the video is a fake, digitally altered clip. “No such scheme has been launched or endorsed by the Ministry of Finance or the Government of India,” the bureau posted on X.
The fact‑check team urged netizens to avoid get‑rich‑quick scams and to verify any unfamiliar claims before acting. They gave quick tips for spotting edits: look for strange lip sync, mismatched backgrounds, logos that don’t match the date, and verify links. Official government sites always end in .gov.in.
Earlier this week, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) also warned investors about fake social‑media IDs that use photos of BSE officials. “These accounts claim to offer wealth advisory services but are not legitimate,” the BSE said.
Both organizations emphasize that investors should not trust unverified recommendations from unfamiliar accounts. Instead, check sources against trusted sites, including the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and BSE’s own listings of registered intermediaries.
By staying alert and fact‑checking before sharing or investing, people can safeguard themselves from online misinformation and avoid costly mistakes.
