India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with Airbus Chairman Rene Obermann in New Delhi on Wednesday to explore big opportunities in the country’s booming aviation sector. The two leaders focused on ways to boost cooperation between India and the global aerospace giant.
In a post on social media, Goyal shared his excitement: “Welcomed the @Airbus Board, led by their Chairman, Mr. Rene Obermann to India. We had an engaging discussion on the tremendous opportunities offered by Bharat and the strong, growing partnership between Airbus and India aviation sector.”
Goyal urged Airbus to ramp up its collaboration and investments in India, calling it a clear sign of the nation’s aerospace sector’s rising strength and appeal to international players. He sees these talks as a key move to solidify India’s role as a global hub for aerospace innovation and manufacturing.
This comes amid massive growth in India’s aviation industry. Last year, Air India signed a deal for 100 Airbus aircraft, including 10 widebody A350 jets and 90 narrowbody A320 family planes like the A321neo. Fast forward to 2023, and IndiGo made headlines with the largest single aircraft order in history: 500 A320 family jets from Airbus. That agreement was inked on June 19 at the Paris Air Show, with top execs from both sides on hand, including IndiGo’s CEO Pieter Elbers and Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury. Deliveries for these planes start rolling out between 2030 and 2035, marking IndiGo’s biggest purchase ever and Airbus’s largest from any airline.
Airbus, a powerhouse European company, builds everything from commercial jets and helicopters to military aircraft and satellites. It’s the world’s top maker of passenger planes, turning out hits like the A320 family, A330, A350, and the massive A380—the largest passenger jet around. The firm goes head-to-head with U.S. rival Boeing in the global skies.
In India, Airbus has deepened ties with local airlines through aircraft sales, manufacturing partnerships, maintenance services, and training programs to fuel the sector’s rapid expansion. Just recently, Air India teamed up with Airbus to launch a cutting-edge pilot training center at the Air India Aviation Training Academy in Gurugram, Haryana. This high-tech facility aims to train over 5,000 new pilots in the next 10 years, helping meet the surging demand in India’s commercial aviation market.
