In New Delhi, officials highlighted that India’s UJALA scheme—short for Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All—has become one of the country’s most successful public‑lighting programs, thanks in large part to the creative work of Piyush Pandey, the award‑winning ad‑tactician.
Piyush Goyal, the Commerce and Industry Minister, said on Saturday that the scheme’s launch on January 5 , 2015 was a direct result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to cutting India’s energy footprint. “We wanted to reach every household not just with policy, but with powerful messaging that touched hearts,” Goyal told followers on X, the social‑media platform formerly known as Twitter. “That’s where Piyush Pandey stepped in.”
Pandey, a long‑time admirer of Modi’s vision, produced a striking video that reminded Indians how simple it is to switch from old, gas‑guzzling bulbs to energy‑efficient LEDs. His creative spin helped millions see the benefit of cleaner, cheaper lighting.
The effect has been huge. Since its start, the UJALA program has supplied 36.87 crore LED bulbs—roughly 368.7 million units—as of January 6 , 2025. The initiative, which began as the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) and later rebranded as UJALA, partners with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and power distribution companies to make LEDs, tube lights and fans affordable for ordinary households.
The scheme cuts electricity bills for millions of families and, by using LEDs, reduces carbon emissions in India’s still‑growing power sector. “UJALA has become the world’s largest zero‑subsidy domestic lighting program, showing how India can lower energy use while boosting environmental and economic performance,” Goyal added.
Under Modi’s electricity strategy, UJALA exemplifies a national effort to make energy-saving technology available, reduce electrification costs, and keep India on a cleaner energy path. The program’s success underscores the power of smart communication and public partnership in reaching a green‑lighting future. —
