On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the last stretch of Mumbai’s new Metro Line 3 – the Aqua Line. The new segment, called Phase 2B, runs 2 kilometres between Atre Chowk and Cuff Parade and cost about Rs 12,200 crore.

With today’s ceremony, the entire line is now finished. The full Mumbai Metro Line 3 – 33.5 km long, the city’s first underground line – will run from Cuff Parade to the Aarey Jogeshwari‑Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR). The project cost over Rs 37,270 crore, and it should cut traffic loads on Mumbai roads and give commuters a quicker, more reliable ride.

The new section gives drivers a direct link to South Mumbai’s key spots – Fort, Kala Ghoda, Marine Drive – and places like the Bombay High Court, Mantralaya, the Reserve Bank of India and the Bombay Stock Exchange. The PM said on X that “Phase 2B is a major boost to Mumbai’s infrastructure. Metro links are essential for the city’s growth, and this will improve life for everyone.”

Fast, affordable service

According to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), a trip from Cuff Parade to Aarey will take less than an hour. Fares start at just Rs 10 and rise to Rs 70, making the service accessible. Trains will run every five minutes from 5:55 am to 10:30 pm. The 27 stations on the line are expected to carry 1.3 million passengers daily. The MMRC also said the metro will cut 261,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year – a greener travel choice.

Mumbai One: a single app for all transport

At the same event, Modi unveiled Mumbai One, an integrated mobility app that joins 11 public transport operators. The list includes Metro Lines 1, 2A and 3, the monorail, Navi Mumbai Metro, suburban rail, BEST buses and several municipal transport systems.

Mumbai One lets riders buy tickets for one or more modes from a single phone screen. It removes queues, offers cash‑less, contact‑less payments, and gives real‑time alerts on delays, alternative routes and estimated arrival times. The app also shows nearby attractions, dining spots and provides an SOS feature for safety. Travelers can plan the fastest and cheapest routes with the new multimodal journey planner.

The app will help locals and tourists alike to navigate the city, support the “Mumbai in Minutes” initiative and serve as a model for India’s other metro cities.

The launch of Phase 2B and the new mobility app bring the city one step closer to smoother, greener, and smarter travel for all of Mumbai’s 20 million residents and millions of visitors each year.
