New Delhi, Oct. 14 – Union Minister Pralhad Joshi will chair India’s World Standards Day (WSD) event today.
The celebration, organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national body that sets standards in India, highlights how standards keep products safe, high‑quality and sustainable.
The event happens at the National Institute of Training for Standardization (NITS). While it’s a big day of recognition, BIS will also unveil India’s new National Lighting Code for 2025. In addition, two new digital tools will be launched: a Learning Management System for training and an Online Standards Development module on the BIS Standards Portal.
This year’s motto – “A Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for Sustainable Development Goals” – stresses how international standards help governments, businesses and communities push toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
BIS plans to hold WSD celebrations at multiple sites across the country. The day was first celebrated in 1970, arguing that standards are essential for safety, quality and global trade. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), along with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), created World Standards Day to spotlight the work of experts who build these rules.
BIS partners with ministries and industry groups to spot gaps and draft national standards. It also checks compliance, making sure products meet BIS‑certified standards. Earlier this month, BIS raided several e‑commerce companies and seized goods that failed to meet its standards.
