Indian Railways is preparing to meet the road‑and‑rail travel boom that hits India every holiday season.
From the next five days, the state‑owned network will run 1,500 special trains – about 300 a day – to help passengers reach Chhath‑Puja‑destination villages safely and comfortably.
These new services run in addition to the regular train timetable. The railways already ran more than 4,400 special trips in the 21 days that wrapped up Diwali, a record that helped millions get home in time for the festival.
A bigger push comes because the rail company has lined up more than 12,000 special services from 1 Oct to 30 Nov, covering both Chhath and the festive period of Diwali. The network has already warned of nearly 11,900 trips (about 916 trains), 9,300 of them reserved and 2,200 unreserved, a jump from the 7,700 trips that ran last year.
Udhna Station in Gujarat gave a concrete example of the effort. On 19 Oct, the railways moved over 36,000 passengers—a 50 % rise over the previous year—by 4 pm so they could head home for Diwali. In the five days before that, more than 120,000 travellers moved through Udhna, thanks to dedicated holding areas, more ticket counters, and crowd‑control measures put in place.
All of this shows how Indian Railways is stepping up to handle surges in passenger traffic during big festivals, making travel safer, quicker, and more comfortable for people all across the country.
