Samba district in Jammu and Kashmir is turning into a hotspot for agricultural innovation as farmers adopt modern techniques to boost their income.
In Tarore village, one farmer’s journey highlights this shift: Rampal Sharma has moved from traditional wheat, paddy, and maize to cultivating ornamental flowers that net him a tidy profit.
For the past decade, Sharma has taken a hands‑on, forward‑thinking approach. He joined government training programs, tapped into horticulture schemes, and started using drip irrigation and other low‑water technologies. “Crop diversification and modern methods can bring higher returns even on limited land,” he says.
Now, on 12 kanals of land, he grows a variety of flowers that appeal to buyers year‑round. “Flower farming needs more care, but with science and the right practices, the profits are comparable to bigger crops,” he explains.
In a single four‑month cycle, Sharma reports a net gain of nearly ₹5 lakhs.
Sharma credits government support for his success. He has benefited from schemes under the Agriculture, Floriculture, and Horticulture Departments, plus the National Horticulture Mission (NHM). The subsidies include drip irrigation systems, seed and plant support, and technical training. “Proper use of these schemes can reduce costs and boost output,” he says. “I’ve made full use of the resources to raise my farming practices.”
His story is inspiring farmers across Samba and the broader Jammu region. Sharma urges his peers to view agriculture as a business: “If you adopt new ideas and treat farming as a trade, you can become self‑reliant. Our climate and land are favorable for almost any crop.”
Looking ahead, Sharma envisions local job creation and more growers in Samba turning to modern, profitable agriculture. His success proves that with the right mindset, a willingness to learn, and government support, farming can be both lucrative and respected.
Each seed of innovation in Sherwar’s fields signals a broader change—turning traditional farms into thriving enterprises and lighting the way for hundreds of farmers across the.
