Brisbane, Nov. 8 – India clinched a 2‑1 win in a T20I series against Australia, and left‑handed opener Abhishek Sharma said his fast rise in the format is thanks to the backing he receives from captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Sharma walked away with the Player of the Series award after scoring 163 runs in three games, averaging 40.75. He was especially dominant in the second match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, smashing 68 runs in just 37 balls while Australia’s Josh Hazlewood tried to slow him down.
“I knew the pitches would offer extra bounce and pace, but I kept my approach the same. I didn’t change my game plan,” he said at the press conference. “With the captain and coach behind me, I had the confidence to play aggressively and keep the opposition on the back foot.”
Sharma also highlighted how his partnership with Shubman Gill has been a seamless fit since their under‑12 days. “Gill is all fire, not ice. We understand each other’s shots and the bowlers we target,” he explained.
His unbeaten 23 in the rain‑washed final match at The Gabba was the second‑fastest time a man from India reached 1,000 T20I runs, topping the mark in his 28th innings, just one shy of Virat Kohli’s record.
Looking ahead, Sharma remains focused on the hard road to the 2025 T20 World Cup on home soil. “The more I play, the easier it becomes to spot my strengths and their limits, but I always want to improve,” he said. “The environment here is positive, and that keeps me moving forward.”
Sharma’s confidence comes from knowing the captain and coach say, “Whether it’s a 15, 20 or a duck, I’ll be there to support you.” “That mentality has helped me play with less fear and more aggressiveness,” he added.
India’s win in this series brings the team closer to defending their T20 World Cup title, with the next leg of the campaign set for early next year.
