India’s smartphone industry is booming like never before! In the first five months of FY 2025-26, smartphone exports have already crossed Rs 1 lakh crore—a massive 55% jump from the same period last year. The country now manufactures over 330 million mobile phones annually, and with about a billion phones in use across India, it’s clear how essential these devices have become in our daily lives.

What’s even more exciting? In the second quarter of 2025, India overtook China to become the top smartphone exporter to the United States. This milestone shows how far we’ve come in the global market.

The growth isn’t just about numbers—it’s creating real opportunities. Over the past decade, India’s mobile phone manufacturing sector has generated more than 12 lakh jobs, helping families and boosting the country’s economy in a big way.

Shifting to consumer trends, India’s smartphone market is changing fast. People are loving 5G technology and premium features. Last year, 5G smartphone shipments made up 82% of all shipments, marking a whopping 49% year-on-year growth. If you’re looking for value, mid-range 5G smartphones priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 13,000 are flying off the shelves, making high-performance gadgets accessible to more Indians.

The premium segment is shining too, with devices above Rs 25,000 seeing a strong 26% year-on-year rise. Buyers now see these as must-have lifestyle upgrades, proving that India’s market caters to everyone—from budget buyers to tech enthusiasts.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted how India’s electronics manufacturing journey has three key phases: starting with ready-made goods, moving to parts assembly, and now diving into deep component production. This shift boosts self-reliance and adds huge value to the ecosystem.

The numbers tell the success story. Overall electronics production jumped from Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 11.3 lakh crore in 2024-25. Mobile phones lead the charge, with production soaring from Rs 18,000 crore to Rs 5.45 lakh crore—a stunning 28-fold increase!

Today, India ranks as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, with over 300 facilities buzzing with activity. Tamil Nadu alone hosts more than 47 electronics units, all backed by schemes from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

This surge in smartphone exports, 5G adoption, and manufacturing jobs positions India as a global powerhouse in electronics. As the market keeps evolving, it’s an exciting time for consumers and the economy alike.
