India’s cement industry is cheering a big win from the government. The South Indian Cement Manufacturers Association (SICMA) thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for slashing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on a bunch of everyday goods and services. This move, announced recently, aims to make life more affordable for consumers and give a real edge to businesses across the country.
Announced on September 20 from New Delhi, the GST cuts come as a smart step toward building a self-reliant India, or Atmanirbhar Bharat. They tackle key worries in sectors like manufacturing and construction, showing the government’s focus on growth that benefits everyone, from cities to villages.
One standout change? The GST on cement drops from 28% to 18%. Cement is the backbone of homes, roads, bridges, and factories, so this cut will lower building costs right away. Homeowners, developers tackling affordable housing, and big infrastructure projects will all feel the relief. It lines up perfectly with the government’s Housing for All drive, helping more families own homes and speeding up development in urban and rural spots alike.
SICMA says this GST reduction on cement will fire up demand and pull in fresh investments. It should create jobs too, while cutting red tape and pushing more activity into the formal economy. “This reform highlights cement’s huge role in shaping India’s future,” the association noted, praising how it boosts efficiency and competitiveness.
Representing top cement makers in southern India, SICMA is all in on making this work. They’re eager to team up with partners to roll it out smoothly and drive India’s overall progress.
