South Korea’s biggest conglomerate, SK Group, has announced a major push into silicon and AI. The company will pour 128 trillion won (about $87.9 billion) into domestic chip production through 2028, with plans that could lift the total to 600 trillion won as demand for AI‑powered memory chips soars.

A key part of the plan is building four large‑scale semiconductor fabs in the Yongin chip cluster just south of Seoul. SK Group will adjust the pace of construction to match market conditions and chip demand, rolling out the investment in phases.

SK Group’s semiconductor arm, SK hynix, is already working with the Korean government on the “Trinity Fab” in Yongin, a 860 billion‑won project that will serve as an open platform and a non‑profit foundation for component makers, research labs, and startups.

Later this week, SK Telecom and SK Broadband partnered with Amazon Web Services to launch an AI data center in Ulsan, slated for operation in 2027.

Chairman Chey Tae‑won told leaders at a meeting with President Lee Jae‑myung that SK Group plans to keep hiring more than 8,000 workers each year and could add 14,000 to 20,000 new jobs over the next decade, boosting the domestic economy and tech sector.
