Cops investigating whether Brown, MIT murders are connected — after days of unsuccessful manhunts

Authorities are examining whether there is any connection between the fatal shooting at Brown University and the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, according to sources cited by The Post.
So far, no suspects have been named in either case. Both attacks happened at or close to prestigious New England universities and occurred just two days apart.
The first shooting unfolded Saturday afternoon in Providence, Rhode Island, when an unknown gunman opened fire during a final exam review session at Brown University. Two students were killed, and nine others were injured.
Two days later, on Monday evening, MIT nuclear science professor Nuno Lourerio, 47, was found fatally shot inside his $1.4 million townhouse in the affluent Boston suburb of Brookline, Massachusetts.
The two crime scenes are located less than 50 miles apart, raising questions for investigators.
Providence police have released several low-quality surveillance images showing a person of interest, including footage that appears to show the unidentified man walking through nearby streets before and after the Brown University shooting.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez told reporters on Wednesday that the suspect “could be anywhere,” while Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said authorities currently have “zero” information about a possible motive.
As the manhunt stretches into its second week, local law enforcement has come under increasing criticism over the slow progress of the investigation.
The Brown University victims were identified as Ella Cook, 19, a sophomore from Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, a freshman of Uzbek American heritage.
In the Brookline case, police responding to reports of gunfire found Lourerio inside his home and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning, the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office confirmed.
Brookline Police Deputy Superintendent Paul Campbell told WBZ-TV News that Lourerio “had been shot multiple times,” but declined to provide additional details.
The Norfolk County Medical Examiner’s Office did not return calls from The Post seeking further information. Meanwhile, the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office said the investigation remains active and that officials are unable to comment further at this time.
