India’s electronics market is buzzing with excitement as lower GST rates kick in just in time for the festive season. Sales are surging across online platforms and stores, thanks to cheaper prices on popular gadgets like air conditioners, televisions, and dishwashers.
The government recently slashed the GST rate on these appliances from 28 percent to 18 percent, a move that industry leaders have pushed for years. “This change will make appliances more affordable and spark demand across the country,” said Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). He added that it plays a key role in growing India’s electronics manufacturing sector by encouraging more local production and consumption.
Experts are also eyeing future cuts. Mohindroo hopes the GST on smartphones and laptops drops from the current 18 percent to 5 percent. “That could make tech more accessible and boost digital inclusion for everyone,” he noted.
Stores selling consumer durables report a clear jump in shoppers. E-commerce sites kicked off festive sales with a bang, drawing crowds eager for deals. Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, shared with , “We saw strong interest right from day one. Buyers are exploring a wide range of electronics, from TVs to appliances, which signals healthy consumer confidence. This festive season looks set to be a blockbuster.”
This GST rationalization, often called GST 2.0, marks a big step in simplifying India’s tax system. It brings more predictability for businesses and paves the way for faster growth. Pair that with holiday promotions, and smartphone sales could skyrocket too.
“Lower taxes mean more affordable devices, so people are more likely to upgrade their phones,” said Prabhu Ram, Vice President at CMR’s Industry Research Group. “With extra cash in their pockets, consumers might splurge on premium models or stick to value-packed options—either way, it’s good news for the market.”
Overall, these changes are fueling optimism in India’s consumer electronics industry, where festive sales often drive a huge chunk of yearly revenue. As shoppers hunt for bargains, experts predict a vibrant season ahead that could strengthen the push for “Make in India” initiatives.
