Swadeshi campaigns to help domestic textiles demand reach $250 billion by 2030

New Delhi, Oct 5 – The Ministry of Textiles is rolling out the Swadeshi Campaign across India for the next 6–9 months to drive a fresh surge in domestic handloom, handicraft and textile buying—especially among urban millennials and Gen Z shoppers.

The government projects that the campaign will lift the domestic textile demand by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9–10 % each year. If the plan works, India could see total textile consumption hit roughly $250 billion by 2030.

Current figures show the country’s clothing and textile market is worth about $179 billion in 2024, already growing faster than 7 % per year. Households account for 58 % of that spend, rising at around 8 % CAGR, while business and institutional buyers make up 21 % of the market and grow at about 6.8 % per year.

The Swadeshi push will showcase Indian textiles as symbols of pride and style, helping the younger generation adopt local designs. It also aims to open new markets for weavers, artisans and MSMEs, offering them better income prospects.

To support the initiative, ministries, state public bodies and schools are encouraged to use Indian-made fabrics for uniforms and furnishings. The campaign will run alongside existing programmes such as the production‑linked incentive for textiles, PM MITRA Parks and One District One Product.

Government officials said events, social‑media outreach and state‑level participation will spread the Swadeshi slogan across the country. New GST rate adjustments for textiles and apparel are expected to boost demand further, potentially accelerating growth in both household and business textile purchases.
