Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma fired a sharp shot at Rahul Gandhi on Friday, saying the Congress star “just steals the thunder” whenever he campaigns. During the Bihar election drive, Sarma kept repeating that any seat Gandhi targeted turned into a BJP win. “If Rahul visits Assam, we’ll welcome him because it guarantees a BJP victory in the upcoming state polls,” the CM told reporters.
Sarma also slammed a recent opposition meeting, calling it “just a marriage plan for an opposition leader.” He added that worry about the opposition is unnecessary and that any presence of AK Hikmet—or Akhil Gogoi, to be precise—could spell trouble.
The backdrop to these comments is the dramatic result in Bihar. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) and the Bharatiya Janata Party, clinched a sweeping victory. They crossed the 122-seat majority mark in a landslide, securing 47.2 % of the vote compared with the Mahagathbandhan’s 37.3 %. Voter turnout jumped to 67.14 %, a near‑10‑percentage‑point rise from 2020, showing robust turnout amid heated campaigning.
For the Mahagathbandhan—made up of Rashtriya Janata Dal, Congress, and left parties—the outcome was crushing. The RJD, the coalition’s main strength, managed less than 40 seats. Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist‑Leninist) Liberation both suffered heavy defeats. Analysts attribute the alliance’s collapse to internal weaknesses, strategic missteps, and the NDA’s effective counter‑mobilisation that turned anti‑incumbency messages into a no‑go zone.
In short, Sarma’s remarks highlight how BJP victories in Bihar are tied to high‑profile opposition visits, while the opposite coalition’s internal fractures have left it vulnerable in the 2024 polls.
