In New Delhi, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh warned that technology sovereignty will shape a nation’s geopolitical power in the years ahead. Speaking at the 84th Foundation Day celebration of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on Friday, he spotlighted India’s shift toward a tech-driven economy and called for bold investments in emerging technologies to stay competitive on the world stage.
“Technology sovereignty will determine the geopolitical sovereignty in the times to come,” Dr. Singh said, emphasizing how India is evolving into a powerhouse of innovation.
CSIR, with its network of 37 labs across the country, plays a key role in everything from healthcare and pharmaceuticals to agriculture, advanced materials, and defense tech. Dr. Singh traced the organization’s roots back to its founding in 1942, crediting pioneers like Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Sir Ramnath Chopra for kickstarting pharmaceutical research in India.
“CSIR’s legacy shows that science and innovation were at the heart of India’s story long before Independence,” he added.
He pointed to recent wins, like the homegrown antibiotic Nafithromycin, as proof of what happens when CSIR teams up with other government science bodies. Dr. Singh also stressed the value of partnerships with industry to turn lab breakthroughs into real-world products that reach everyday people.
Take CSIR’s work in agriculture: Projects like lavender farming in Jammu and Kashmir and tulip cultivation in Palampur have boosted farmers’ incomes and transformed local communities. On the security front, CSIR technologies, including specialized sensors used in Operation Sindoor, have strengthened India’s defenses.
Looking forward, Dr. Singh laid out a simple plan to make science work for everyone: Focus on awareness, affordability, and accessibility. He encouraged scientists to embrace social media and modern tools to share their discoveries and connect directly with the public, helping bridge the gap between labs and lives.
