In the heart of Telangana, a small village called Kondareddypally has turned heads as India’s second fully solar-powered community and the very first in South India. This spot, the hometown of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, now runs entirely on clean solar energy, thanks to the state’s ambitious green energy mission.
Nestled in Vangoor Mandal of Nagarkurnool district, the village powers 514 homes and 11 government buildings with sunlight alone. Right now, 480 houses buzz along on 3 KW rooftop solar panels, while local schools and offices get their juice from 60 KW solar setups. Officials plan to hook up the remaining 34 mud homes as soon as they’re upgraded to sturdy pucca houses through the Indiramma housing program.
Residents love how each home churns out about 360 units of electricity every month. That means no more blackouts, no monthly bills, and plenty of reliable power for daily life. But here’s the exciting part: Kondareddypally isn’t just self-sufficient—it’s making money from the sun. Extra energy feeds into the state’s grid at Rs 5.25 per unit, turning villagers into real green entrepreneurs. Last month, they sold a whopping 100,000 units and pocketed nearly Rs 5 lakh.
This solar village project, costing Rs 10.53 crore, got a big boost from multiple sources: a Rs 3.56 crore subsidy from the central government, Rs 4.09 crore in CSR funds from Premier Energies, and Rs 2.59 crore for infrastructure. The Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO) led the effort, with locals pitching in every step of the way.
Villagers beam with pride, saying they’ve gone from everyday rural folks to key players in Telangana’s clean energy push. Officials hail Kondareddypally as a shining model, where cutting-edge solar technology meets simple village living. It’s a game-changer for cutting carbon emissions, boosting renewable energy adoption, and lifting rural economies.
At its core, this story shows how a smart government plan, corporate backing, and community teamwork can spark real, lasting change in places like Kondareddypally—proving solar power can light up lives and futures across India.
