Tamil Nadu Launches AI and Coding Program for Government School Kids
Imagine government school students in Tamil Nadu diving into the world of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and coding – it’s happening right now! The state government has kicked off an exciting pilot program this academic year to bring these cutting-edge skills to kids in Classes 6 to 9. Called the Tamil Nadu Schools Programme for AI, Robotics and Knowledge of Online Tools (TN SPARK), it’s all about closing the tech gap and creating a generation ready for tomorrow’s jobs, no matter their background.
This initiative targets government schools, making AI education and digital tools accessible to everyone. In Coimbatore district, 85 schools are jumping in during the first phase – that’s 78 middle schools, four high schools, and three higher secondary schools. Teachers are buzzing with energy, using specially designed bilingual textbooks in English and Tamil to guide the classes. Math and science pros lead the sessions, dedicating one or two periods a week to TN SPARK.
What’s powering this? Around 880 high-tech lab computers in these schools! The program started with fun intro sessions, but it’ll ramp up in October after the quarterly exams. Kids get hands-on with computer science basics like algorithms, flowcharts, word processing, and data visualization. Plus, interactive online tools make learning science, geography, anatomy, and languages way more engaging.
The AI part is super cool – students explore creative stuff like turning text into images or speech, doodling digitally, making art, translating languages, and even animation. For coding, they start easy with platforms like Blockly, Turtle Art, and Scratch, then dip into HTML basics and cyber safety tips. Teachers say the kids love it; many pick these classes over regular ones because they’re so interactive and fun.
These hi-tech labs aren’t just gadgets – they’re sparking curiosity and sharpening problem-solving skills. Officials explain that TN SPARK goes beyond tech access; it builds digital literacy to prep students for future careers and studies. Tamil Nadu is leading the way here, showing how government schools can integrate AI training and robotics education to level the playing field for all kids. If this pilot succeeds, it could inspire more states to follow suit!
