Tripura Boosts Farmers’ Income with 21 New E-Markets for Agri Products
In a big step to help farmers earn more, Tripura’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department is teaming up with the Central government to turn 21 local markets into modern e-markets. This will let farmers sell their fresh produce across India easily. Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath shared this exciting update while inaugurating a new market at Kulai and a Village Knowledge Centre at Noagaon in Dhalai district.
Tripura currently has 554 agricultural markets, including 84 wholesale ones, with 21 focused on agri-produce. "We’ve been in power for seven years now, and we know that growing crops isn’t enough—you need strong markets to sell them just like factory goods," Nath said. Before 2018, the government spent just Rs 20.20 crore on market development. But in the last seven years, they’ve poured in Rs 303 crore to support farmers. This shows how seriously the BJP government takes farmers’ welfare in Tripura.
The big plan falls under the Central government’s Electronic National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) scheme. Farmers can simply upload photos of their products, add details like quantity, and sell them nationwide from home—getting fair prices without middlemen hassles. "This e-market initiative will connect Tripura farmers directly to buyers across the country," Nath explained.
The state will roll this out step by step. First up, seven markets in Panisagar, Pabiachara, Kulai Bazar, Teliamura, Mohanpur, Sonamura, and Santirbazar will go digital. Next, 12 more will join, including Dasda, Bachaibari, Kalyanpur, Champaknagar, Bishalgarh, Jampuijala, Melaghar, Barpathari, Natun Bazar, Ganda Twisa, and Chawmanu.
Each of these e-markets will come equipped with everything farmers need: an office, auction platform, clean drinking water, stalls, a lab, grading and sorting areas, weighing systems, and warehouses. For the initial seven markets, Tripura has already received Rs 2.10 crore from the Central government to get things started.
"Our goal is clear: double farmers’ income and make sure they get the right price for their hard work," Nath added. Agriculture forms the backbone of Tripura’s economy and growth, so these e-markets for agricultural products will make a real difference for local farmers.
