US President Donald Trump just wrapped up a key phone chat with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and it brought some big news on TikTok’s future in America. Trump revealed that Xi has given the green light to a deal that keeps the popular social media app running smoothly in the US, easing months of tension over its operations.
Sharing the update on Truth Social, Trump said he’s grateful for the TikTok approval and can’t wait to catch up with Xi in person at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in South Korea next month. In his post, Trump called the call “very productive” and highlighted progress on hot topics like US-China trade deals, cracking down on fentanyl trafficking, and pushing for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
Trump also mentioned plans for more high-level meets: He’ll head to China early next year, and Xi will visit the US at a good time. From the Chinese side, they described the conversation as “pragmatic, positive, and constructive.”
On the TikTok front, Xi made it clear that China backs companies sorting out their issues through fair market talks, as long as they follow Chinese laws and balance everyone’s interests. He urged the US to create an open and fair environment for Chinese firms investing stateside. Xi praised recent team talks between the two countries for showing equality, respect, and mutual benefits. But he added a firm note: The US should avoid one-sided trade restrictions that could undo all the hard work from ongoing US-China consultations.
This comes right after the Trump administration announced a breakthrough framework agreement on the TikTok deal earlier this week. The talks happened over two days in Madrid, Spain, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer leading the American team. On the Chinese end, Vice Premier He Lifeng and top negotiator Li Chenggang handled things.
“We have a framework for a TikTok deal,” Bessent confirmed from Madrid. So far, neither side has spilled the beans on the exact details of this US-China TikTok agreement, but it looks like a step toward smoother tech relations between the superpowers.
Stay tuned as more unfolds on this TikTok US operations story—could be a game-changer for the app’s millions of users.
