New Delhi – The Indian government announced it raised more than ₹800 crore last month by selling scrap and old assets from ministries and departments. The total comes from the month‑long “Swachhta” campaign that ran from October 2 to 31, a record‑breaking effort that opened up 23.2 million square feet of office space and cleared 2.9 million paper files.
Under the scheme, the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DAR&PG) coordinated 1.158 million office sites. Three union ministers – Mansukh Mandaviya, K. Ram Mohan Naidu and Dr. Jitendra Singh – oversaw the 84 ministries and departments that participated, including India’s diplomatic missions abroad.
The annual cleanliness drive, launched in 2021 at the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, now sits at the heart of India’s administrative reform. Since the campaign began, the government has earned almost ₹4,100 crore by disposing of scrap, e‑waste and obsolete assets. Across five editions, the campaign has cleaned up 23.62 million offices, removed 166.95 million files and freed 928.84 million square feet of space.
“This year, we also focused on cutting back government backlog,” said Union Minister Jitendra Singh at the launch of “Special Swachhta Campaign 5.0” in Nehru Park. He added that the disposal of e‑waste alone generated ₹3,296.71 crore and that the campaign has visibly improved governance and public services.
During the launch, ministers walked through cleared offices, planted trees under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, and participated in volunteer cleanup events. The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances received special thanks for its role in driving these results.
The Swachhta campaign highlights the power of cleaning up bureaucracy and shows how a cleaner, more efficient government can also bring in significant revenue.
