Farrukhabad, Oct 19 – The candlelit day of Dhanteras turned the streets of Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh into a shopping frenzy. People filled up auto showrooms, jewellery stalls and kitchen‑ware shops from dawn until midnight, eager to take advantage of lower prices and start the Diwali celebrations on a lucky note.
Gold, silver and gifts steal the show
Shoppers raced into local markets to buy gold bangles, silver coins and stainless‑steel utensils that are traditionally considered auspicious for the festival of lights. The relaxed Goods‑and‑Services‑Tax (GST) rates made these items cheaper, and customers happily snapped up daily‑use sets and family gift packages. “It took a while to reach the crowded market, but I finally got my steel utensils,” said a local shopper who visited Chowk Bazaar. Another woman joked that the same crowd‐tangled street still let her finish buying a dinner set, though the wait was longer.
Record sales in the two‑wheelers market
The district’s auto market set a new record. Service bays in every showroom were full of buyers, and the final tally shows that roughly 1,000 bicycles and scooters—and about 100 four‑wheelers—sold in a single day. Hero motorcycles led the pack with more than 400 bikes flown off the shelves, followed by 300 TVS scooters and a good spread of Bajaj models. The GST relaxation helped reduce bike prices by ₹5,000 to ₹15,000, giving customers a real deal.
Turning the market into a festive hub
The traders at the bullion stand watched a wave of excited buyers pour in for light‑gold jewellery and silver coins. Alongside jewellery, electronics giants saw a spike in LED lamp sales as households upgraded their Diwali décor. Local bullion traders Anupam Rastogi and Shivang Rastogi described a “buzzing, enthusiastic atmosphere” as customers hurried to secure their purchases before the festival rush.
Turnover hits ₹10 crore
The local traders estimate that the district alone generated about ₹10 crore in Dhanteras sales. The surge in activity and high turnout hint at a strong start for the month of Diwali. If the current trend continues, Farrukhabad’s markets could stay busy throughout the celebration season, drawing more tourists and shoppers to the region.
By the end of the day, the city had turned its economy into a lively, festival‑fueled marketplace—an exciting preview of the joy and prosperity that Diwali is meant to bring.
