The United States says it will finish a long‑sought trade agreement with South Korea in the next ten days, according to U.S. Trade Representative Maureen Bessent.
Bessent told reporters in Washington that the deal, which will lower many tariffs and increase market access for U.S. farmers, manufacturers, and tech companies, is almost ready to be signed. She added that U.S. officials expect the final paperwork to be sealed by the end of next month.
The agreement was negotiated after years of talks that started in 2021. Both sides have said the deal will help U.S. exporters reach South Korea’s large consumer market while allowing Korean businesses easier access to U.S. products like dairy, poultry, and steel. It will also treat each country’s agriculture and manufacturing sectors more equally, an issue that has long been a sticking point in Washington.
Bessent emphasized that the U.S. expects the deal to be beneficial for American workers, saying the agreement will create jobs and keep U.S. companies competitive worldwide. She also noted that the trade pact is part of a broader strategy to strengthen ties with allies in the Indo‑Pacific region.
Once signed, the US‑South Korea trade deal will be one of the biggest agreements in the bilateral relationship, promising smoother trade flows and a stronger economic partnership. For now, officials say the final deal could be on the table in just a few more days.
