WhatsApp is testing a new rule that limits how many messages users can send to people who aren’t in their contact list and don’t reply. The change is aimed at trimming spam and giving users a quieter inbox.
The instant‑messaging app has grown from a simple chat tool into a platform that supports communities, business accounts and customer‑service channels. With that growth, unwanted promos and bulk messages have become a bigger problem for many users.
According to TechCrunch, WhatsApp is running a monthly “non‑contact” message cap. Every one‑to‑one message sent to someone who hasn’t replied counts toward the limit. For example, if a user sends three messages to the same stranger who never responds, all three will use up one third of that month’s allowance.
The exact cap is still under test, but users who approach the limit will probably see a warning. Once the limit is hit, the app may temporarily block them from sending new messages to unknown contacts. Regular conversations with friends and family will not be affected.
India, which hosts more than 500 million WhatsApp users, is a key focus for these spam‑reducing efforts. In the past year, the company has added tools such as marketing‐message restrictions, easy unsubscribe options for business chats, and limits on broadcast lists.
Businesses that rely on WhatsApp to reach customers may need to shift from mass blasts to building real connections. For everyday users, the new limit should bring a cleaner, more personal chat experience.
While the change won’t wipe out all spam, it marks a clear step toward restoring WhatsApp’s original mission: helping people keep private, personal conversations.
