Wholesale beat automobile demand estimates in September: Report

India’s auto market bounced back strongly in September 2025, beating expectations in every major vehicle category, says an ICICI Securities report. The lift came after the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate was cut on September 22, sparking fresh retail and wholesale interest across the industry.

Two‑wheelers jump with strong scooter sales

  • Hero MotoCorp sold about 687,000 units, up 8 % from last year, helped by popular scooter models.
  • TVS Motor grew 12 % to 541,000 units, including more than 31,000 electric iQube scooters, showing electric‑vehicle momentum.
  • Bajaj Auto posted a 9 % rise to 511,000 units, boosted by a 15 % jump in three‑wheeler exports.
  • Royal Enfield (part of Eicher Motors) saw a sharp 43 % increase to 124,000 units, beating analysts’ forecasts.

Passenger cars see steady growth amid supply bumps

  • Maruti Suzuki posted a 3 % rise to 190,000 units, although logistics constraints slowed sales; exports surged 52 %.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) increased volumes by 10 %.
  • Tata Motors saw its biggest jump, up 47 % to 61,000 units, helped by almost doubling its electric‑vehicle sales.
  • Hyundai Motor India grew 10 % overall, with exports up 44 %.

Commercial vehicles regain traction

  • Tata Motors’ commercial‑vehicle sales rose 19 % to 36,000 units, driven by higher heavy and light truck demand.
  • Ashok Leyland climbed 9 % overall.
  • M&M’s light commercial vehicles grew 18 %.

Tractors lead the pack

  • Tractors exploded with a 49 % year‑over‑year surge.
  • M&M sold about 66,000 units, while Escorts moved 18,000, both well ahead of expectations.

ICICI Securities highlighted that the revival reflects healthy demand across sectors, fueled by festive buying and the GST rate cut. The upbeat January‑profile indicates a solid rebound for India’s automotive economy.
