National Tennis C’ship: Olympian Vishnu, top seed Nitin reach third round

In New Delhi, top players kept their momentum going at the 30th National Tennis Championship, also known as the Fenesta Open, on Wednesday. This major Indian tennis event, India’s largest domestic tournament, draws the country’s best talents to the DLTA Complex.
Telangana’s Vishnu Vardhan, an Olympian and former Asian Games medalist, cruised into the third round of men’s singles with a straightforward 6-1, 6-2 win over Deepak A. West Bengal’s top seed Nitin Kumar Sinha also advanced easily when his opponent, Smit Patel, retired due to injury at 6-3, 3-2 in the second set.
The Fenesta Open, backed by DCM Shriram Ltd. and organized by the All India Tennis Association (AITA) and Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA), features intense competition across categories.
Tamil Nadu’s Manish Sureshkumar, a past champion, powered through Odisha’s Debasis Sahoo 6-2, 6-1 in men’s singles, showing off his speed and strength.
In women’s singles, Karnataka’s fourth seed Soha Sadiq fought a tough battle against Maharashtra’s Aakruti N Sonkusare. Aakruti jumped to a 3-1 lead in the first set, but Soha rallied with five straight games to take it 6-3. Aakruti fought back to win the second set 6-3, yet Soha sealed the match 6-4 in the third for a grueling 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory.
Maharashtra’s second seed Akanksha Nitture stayed sharp, beating Sohini Sanjay Mohanty 6-1, 7-6 (2) to reach the third round. Punjab’s Sahira Singh dominated her match, defeating Jeetesh Kumari 6-3, 6-2.
Beyond the glory of winning titles, players compete for a prize pool exceeding Rs 21.55 lakh, plus kit allowances in junior categories. Winners and runners-up in the Under-16 and Under-14 singles events snag a Rs 25,000 tennis scholarship each.
The Boys and Girls Under-16 and Under-14 qualifying and main draw matches kick off from October 5 to 11, promising more exciting action in this key Indian tennis championship.
