Exciting updates are rolling in for the upcoming Tamil film Thandakaaranyam, directed by Athiyan Athirai. The makers just revealed the character names and looks for Shabeer Kallarakkal and Balasaravanan, adding more buzz to this highly anticipated movie starring Dinesh and Kalaiyarasan in the leads.
Neelam Productions, backed by director Pa Ranjith, shared the details on X (formerly Twitter). For Shabeer Kallarakkal, they posted: "Rage and rivalry! #Shabeer as Amitabh #ThandakaaranyamFromSept19 #தண்டகாரண்யம்." It turns out Shabeer plays a police constable named Amitabh, bringing intensity to the role.
Then, they introduced Balasaravanan’s character: "Their bond will teach you resilience. #Balasaravanan as Rupesh. #ThandakaaranyamFromSept19 #தண்டகாரண்யம்." Balasaravanan also steps into the shoes of a police constable as Rupesh, promising some heartfelt moments.
Fans already know Kalaiyarasan portrays Murugan, a member of the uniformed services, while Dinesh takes on Sadaiyan, the tribal leader. The film’s teaser, dropped recently, hooks you right away with a woman’s voice narrating from a tribal village on the forest’s edge. She shares a folklore tale: "Every time a girl is born in this forest, a root vegetable is born with her. My grandmother Richiamma used to say the man who finds that root and brings it to you is your destined one." She adds, "The forest isn’t just trees and plants—it’s our love too. One day, my man stood me under this tree and went to find the root for me. He still hasn’t returned."
The visuals hint at a deeper story of oppression hidden in the forest lands, using the woman’s tale as an allegory. It builds suspense around themes of resilience, rivalry, and tribal life in Tamil cinema.
Thandakaaranyam boasts a strong cast, including Rithyvika, Vinsu Sam, Muthukumar, Aruldass, and Saranya Ravichandran in key roles. Produced by Neelam Productions and Learn and Teach Production, the movie has cleared the Censor Board with a U/A rating and hits theaters on September 19.
On the tech side, Justin Prabhakaran composes the music, Pratheep Kaliraja handles cinematography, Selva does the editing, and Tha Ramalingam takes care of art direction. The team shot entirely in real forests, mountain villages, and hilly areas, giving it an authentic, immersive feel.
