Mumbai, October 21 – Bollywood legend Asrani, 84, died on Sunday morning after a chest infection. The actor, best known for his comic genius in classic films like Sholay, Chupke Chupke and Gol Maal, left behind a legacy of more than 350 movies in Hindi, Gujarati and Rajasthani cinema.
The news sent shockwaves across the film world. A close friend of Asrani confirmed the passing, and the actor’s official Instagram account shared a heartfelt tribute. It read, “The world of comedy and cinema is richer because of Asraniji’s priceless contributions. May his soul rest in peace.” The obituary was posted just hours after the star had wished fans a happy Diwali.
Singer and composer Adnan Sami took to his own social media to honour the veteran. He posted a clip from his hit song “Lift Karade,” a track that featured Asrani’s famous Sholay jailor character. In the caption, Sami wrote, “I am so saddened to learn about the passing of our dearest legend Asraniji.” He added, “He was a genius of his craft and an artistic treasure. While people will always remember him for his comedy, his dramatic roles were equally brilliant.” Sami also recalled the moment he asked Asrani to reprise his iconic jailor in the music video. “The actor was so committed to authenticity—he even used the original wig and uniform from Sholay. He had great enthusiasm and passion for his work,” he said.
Sami finished his tribute with gratitude: “Thank you, God, for blessing us with the genius of Asraniji. Thank you, Asraniji, for giving us so many memories! God bless your soul,” he wrote, tagging the video with #adnansami.
Asrani’s final rites were performed at Santacruz Crematorium on Monday. He studied at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune before launching his career in the mid‑1960s, going on to become a staple figure in Indian cinema. His role as the bumbling jailor in Sholay remains a cultural touchstone, instantly recognizable to generations of moviegoers.
Fans and colleagues continue to celebrate a career that crossed genres, languages, and even guided him to direct a few Hindi and Gujarati films. Asrani’s death marks the end of an era, but his performances will keep inspiring laughter and happiness for years to come.
