Ireland Baldwin, the 29‑year‑old daughter of Alec Baldwin and former model Kim Basinger, shared a raw look at her childhood in a Substack blog post on Monday. She said she no longer feels weighed down by the “poisonous” relatives she describes as narcissistic, unreliable and addicted.
The ex‑model‑turned‑mother wrote that she “grew up without two parents in my home and no siblings to turn to.” She explained how, in those early years, she felt the need to win over family members who offered occasional praise but were ultimately toxic. “Their validation and praise was meaningful to me,” she said. “Nothing was more freeing than finally realizing how poisonous these people are.”
Baldwin emphasized that her 2‑year‑old daughter, Holland, need not know about the toxic family members. She wants to protect Holland and build a family on her own terms. “I can do my very best to construct my own idea of a family, piece by piece,” she added. Her goal as a mother is to “show how a real family treats one another.”
The post also included a list of life lessons, with a nod to her mother. She urged readers to “tell your mom you love her every single day” and to stay in touch. She reminds herself and her audience that “you can’t fix or change anyone … so quit while you’re ahead” and repeatedly writes, “You are not fat.”
Ireland’s parents have not yet responded to related press queries. Alec Baldwin, 67, revealed on a recent reality show that the legal battle over custody, which hit the family hard, still looms in his memories. He has since said he now has a good relationship with Ireland, and that his regret over the divorce mainly concerns the strain it placed on his bond with his daughter.
Kim Basinger, 71, confirmed in an interview that she and Alec maintain a respectful relationship. The couple married in 1993 and welcomed Ireland in 1995 before divorcing in 2002. While Ireland’s father is now married to Hilaria Baldwin—who raised their seven children—she remains close to her biological mother. In a recent Instagram post, Ireland praised Hilaria, calling her “the best mom” and crediting her for helping her rebuild a healthy connection with Alec.
The story underscores the challenges many children of high‑profile families face and highlights Ireland Baldwin’s determination to create a supportive, loving environment for her own child.
