Chennai: The Malayalam legend Mohanlal has expressed excitement over the National Film Archive of India’s (NFDC) successful restoration of his beloved 1989 masterpiece Kireedam from a 35mm print. He added that seeing the film back in cinemas would be a cherished moment.
On his X feed, Mohanlal announced that the pristine 4K version will make its world premiere during the Special Screenings segment at the 56th International Film Festival of India in Goa. He noted that the final colour grading was overseen by the original cinematographer, S Kumar.
“We’re thrilled to debut the 4K restoration of Kireedam (1989) at IFFI Goa. NFDC meticulously revived the film from a 35mm release print, preserved for decades after the original negative disintegrated. The final grading was supervised by cinematographer S. Kumar. It is an honour to witness this classic return to the screen,” Mohanlal wrote.
The star added, “It is heartening to see Kireedam revived under the National Film Heritage Mission. My best wishes to NFDC–NFAI as they continue preserving and presenting India’s cinematic heritage for future generations, in both digital and analog form.”
For those unfamiliar, Kireedam was directed by Sibi Malayil and released in 1989. Mohanlal stars opposite Thilakan, Parvathy Jayaram, and Mohanraj. The film, deemed a cult classic, earned Mohanlal his first National Award—receiving a Special Mention for his powerful portrayal of a young man’s anguish. Commercially and critically, it cemented itself as one of Malayalam cinema’s most iconic works.
