Anupam Kher delighted fans when he met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at a lively reception in Mumbai that highlighted the growing UK‑India partnership. The veteran Bollywood star posted a photo of the two together on Instagram, captioning it, “It was a pleasure meeting the British Prime Minister Mr. Keir Starmer last night at the reception to celebrate the UK‑INDIA partnership.”
During the event, Starmer’s speech was praised for its optimism about future ties between the two countries. Kher also shared that the prime minister is a big fan of the actor’s first English‑language film, Bend It Like Beckham, which helped make the encounter even more special. “He also turned out to be a great admirer of my first English‑language film Bend It Like Beckham! Thanks to the British High Commissioner Mr. Harjinder Kang for the invite!” the actor added.
The reception was set to a crowd‑pleaser from Bollywood: the iconic love anthem “Tujhe Dekha To” from the 1995 blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). Yash Raj Films, which produced the film, hosted the U.K. leaders and shared footage of Starmer listening and smiling to the song on its Instagram page. The company noted that the UK‑YRF relationship has a long history and that a new three‑film production pact will start in 2026, with projects ranging from a stage adaptation of DDLJ to an English musical called Come Fall In Love.
For fans of Bollywood and global cinema, this visit underscores how movies like Bend It Like Beckham and DDLJ bridge cultures, while the UK‑India partnership gains momentum in film, business and cultural exchanges.
