Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher is sharing his thoughts on what makes great acting tick. He believes it’s not just about looking the part—it’s about tapping into an inner sense of calm and strength to truly connect with the character.

Kher posted a behind-the-scenes video on Instagram, showing him prepping for his role in the upcoming Canadian movie “Calorie.” The film is gearing up for its world premiere at the Calgary International Film Festival, running from September 18 to 28.

Reflecting on his work in “Calorie,” Kher explained, “As an actor in certain roles, it is not just the exterior that matters. One has to connect with the character from within, bringing a certain inner calmness and strength. That’s what I focused on while working for Calorie.”

He’s not making it to the festival in person, but Kher sent warm wishes to the team: “@caloriethefilm is having its first official screening at the prestigious @ciffcalgary! I am sorry I am not personally present but my best wishes are always with the whole team! Jai Ho! #Canadian #Film.”

“Calorie” draws from a real-life tragedy and explores a family’s struggle to heal from deep-rooted pain while trying to reconnect. At its heart is Monika, a Sikh-Canadian woman who’s kept a devastating secret from her two teenage daughters amid rocky family ties.

Desperate to fix things, Monika sends her calorie-obsessed 13-year-old Alia and rebellious 17-year-old Simi to spend the summer with relatives in Amritsar, India. This gives her space to confront her own ghosts from the 1985 Air India bombing, which claimed her mother’s life when she was just a teen.

When Monika finally joins her daughters in India, they give her the cold shoulder, feeling left behind. The story weaves together themes of grief, secrets, and second chances across generations, making “Calorie” a poignant look at immigrant family life and cultural roots.
