Actress Anya Singh, who plays a talent manager in the fresh Netflix series The Bastards of Bollywood, is opening up about why artists need to hold firm against the ups and downs of filmmaking.
Chatting with in Mumbai’s bustling BKC neighborhood during the show’s promotions, Singh pointed to Bollywood legend Aditya Chopra as a prime example. He stuck to his guns with his 1995 debut hit Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), which shattered old Hindi cinema rules and became an all-time classic.
“DDLJ happened because Aditya Chopra pushed for his exact vision,” Singh said. “I really believe, and so do all my co-stars, that you’ve never seen anything like The Bastards of Bollywood on Indian OTT platforms. That’s down to Aryan Khan—he didn’t budge from his script, his characters, or what he wanted to create.”
Singh recalled challenging the director on one intense scene. “I told him, ‘I think it’s a bit much,'” she shared. “But he replied, ‘That’s the character.’ He always saw things from the character’s angle—why they say or do something—even knowing people would have strong opinions.”
She added with a smile, “He just said, ‘This is my world, and it’ll play out this way.’ We all trusted him completely and went along for the ride.”
Fans can catch The Bastards of Bollywood streaming now on Netflix, bringing a bold new take to Bollywood stories.
