Shriver, a longtime ABC News reporter, stood by Schwarzenegger through his action-packed career and political stint. The scandal exploded when Schwarzenegger admitted to fathering a son, Joseph Baena, with their family housekeeper, Mildred “Patty” Baena. Looking back, Schwarzenegger has owned up to his mistakes. In a 2023 interview, he called the affair his “f–k up” and “failure.” Still, he emphasized their strong co-parenting bond. “We’re good friends,” he said, adding that they celebrated holidays like Easter, Mother’s Day, and Christmas as a family, plus all the kids’ birthdays. “If there’s Oscars for handling divorce, Maria and I should win for having the least impact on the kids,” he joked.
Shriver opened up about the pain in her poetry book “I Am Maria,” writing, “It broke my heart, it broke my spirit, it broke what was left of me. Honestly, it was brutal and I was terrified.”
