Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma promises a heartfelt farewell for beloved singer Zubeen Garg, who tragically passed away in Singapore earlier this week. Sarma wants the event to honor Garg’s massive legacy as one of Assam’s top cultural icons.
On Sunday, Sarma visited the proposed cremation site in Sonapur to check preparations for Garg’s final rites. He shared his thoughts on social media platform X, writing: “Our #BelovedZubeen will be accorded a befitting farewell, one that justifies his legacy as one of Assam’s biggest cultural icons. I inspected the proposed cremation site in Sonapur a while back to oversee the preparations where Zubeen will be laid to his final rest.”
Fans across Guwahati showed their deep emotions as Garg’s body arrived from New Delhi on a special flight. Thousands gathered to pay respects, lighting candles in memory of the iconic artist known for hits like “Ya Ali.” Sarma and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita received the body at Guwahati’s airport and offered tributes.
Earlier, the body had flown in from Singapore to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi before heading to Assam. Sarma announced that Garg’s remains will lie in state at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Sarusajai, Guwahati, on September 21 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. This gives fans, friends, and admirers a chance to say goodbye. The government’s statement urged everyone to help make the farewell dignified and memorable for Assam’s “beloved son.”
In response to the loss, the Assam government declared three days of state mourning starting now. Officials say no entertainment events, ceremonies, or public celebrations will happen during this time, allowing the state to grieve the singer, filmmaker, and heartthrob who touched millions.
