Get ready for some beachside excitement—Baywatch is making a splashy return! Fox just greenlit a full reboot of the classic lifeguard drama, heading straight to series for the 2026-2027 TV season. The network ordered 12 episodes, teaming up with Fremantle to bring this iconic show back to life.
Matt Nix steps in as showrunner and executive producer, while the original creators—Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, and Doug Schwartz—jump back on board as executive producers too. They’ll join forces with Dante Di Loreto in the production lineup. Those original minds behind Baywatch captured the thrill of lifeguards and sunny beach vibes that hooked fans everywhere back in the day.
Michael Thorn, president of Fox Entertainment, couldn’t hold back his enthusiasm. “Baywatch defined beach life and turned lifeguards into legends,” he said. “Now, with Fremantle, we’re reviving this TV powerhouse for today’s audience.” He added that Fox, Fremantle, Nix, and Bonann aim to deliver fresh stories, hot new talent, and all the high-energy action that made Baywatch a worldwide hit.
For those who need a refresher, the original Baywatch launched in 1989 on NBC and ran one season there before syndication kicked in for 10 more, racking up nearly 250 episodes total. Production shifted to Hawaii for the final two seasons, rebranding it Baywatch: Hawaii. Fox even aired a reunion TV movie in 2003.
At its peak, Baywatch became the most-watched show on the planet, beaming into more than 200 countries. David Hasselhoff led the pack as head lifeguard Mitch Buchannon, and the series skyrocketed careers for stars like Pamela Anderson, Jason Momoa, Yasmine Bleeth, and Carmen Electra. It spun off into the short-lived Baywatch Nights and inspired a 2017 big-screen reboot with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron.
Fans of the Baywatch reboot have plenty to look forward to as this lifeguard legend hits the sand again with modern twists.
