Mohanlal, the beloved Malayalam superstar, has won the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023, and the Indian film world is lighting up with celebrations. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting shared the exciting news on Saturday, praising the actor, director, and producer for his incredible contributions to Indian cinema.
“Mohanlal’s remarkable journey in films inspires generations,” the ministry posted on X. “His unmatched talent, versatility, and hard work have set a golden standard in Indian film history.” They’ll present the award to him on September 23 during the 71st National Film Awards ceremony.
Close friend and producer Antony Perumbavoor, who’s worked with Mohanlal for years, couldn’t hold back his joy. On Instagram, he wrote, “Seeing my dearest Mohanlal Sir honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award fills me with immense joy. For those of us who’ve walked this journey with him, it’s more than an award—it’s a celebration of a lifetime of love and dedication to cinema. Blessed to stand by your side always.”
Top Malayalam actress Manju Warrier also jumped in with her congrats on social media: “Congratulations Laletta! Thank you for inspiring generations. And for being our very own! @mohanlal #dadasahebphalkeaward.”
Fellow actress Sshivada shared a heartfelt message too, saying, “Congratulations Laletta on receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award! You’ve always inspired us and continue to do so every single day. I feel blessed to have shared the screen with you, and I’ll forever cherish your words: ‘Life is beautiful, amazing—make it extraordinary.’ You truly live by those words, and we’re all inspired to do the same. Keep inspiring us, always. @mohanlal.”
Even director Ram Gopal Varma chimed in on X with his signature humor: “I don’t know much about #DadasahebPhalke except that he’s made the 1st ever film, which I didn’t see and I never met anyone who saw it, but from what I saw and know of @Mohanlal, I think Dadasaheb Phalke should be given the MOHANLAL AWARD.”
This honor adds to Mohanlal’s long list of achievements in Indian cinema. The government gave him the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019 for his work. Back in 2009, he made history as the first Indian actor to earn an honorary lieutenant colonel rank in the Territorial Army. Fans and colleagues agree: Mohanlal’s legacy in Malayalam and Indian films keeps growing stronger.
