Bombay HC directs NCB to return actress Rhea Chakraborty’s passport

In a major win for actress Rhea Chakraborty, the Bombay High Court has ordered the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to return her passport, which they seized back in 2020. This comes as relief in the ongoing drugs case tied to the death of her former partner, the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The court, led by Justice Neela Gokhale, made the decision Tuesday, saying there’s no reason to question Chakraborty’s intentions. But they added some strict conditions to keep things in check. She now has to show up for every court hearing unless the trial court excuses her. Plus, if she travels abroad, she must share her flight and hotel details with prosecutors at least four days ahead. Upon returning to India, she’ll need to notify the investigation agencies right away and keep her phone active with an updated mobile number.

This all stems from Chakraborty’s arrest on September 8, 2020, by the NCB in the high-profile drugs probe connected to Rajput’s death on June 14 that year. She got bail shortly after but had to hand over her passport as part of the deal. Recently, her lawyer Ayaz Khan filed a new plea, arguing that without her passport, she couldn’t take up acting gigs overseas. He pointed out that she’s always followed court rules before and plans to keep doing so.

The court agreed, noting that other people accused in the same case had already gotten their passports back. The NCB pushed back hard, though. Their lawyer argued that as a celebrity, Chakraborty shouldn’t get special perks and warned she might flee the country for good if she leaves.

Chakraborty’s case has stayed in the spotlight since Rajput’s tragic passing, drawing massive attention to the drugs investigation and Bollywood’s inner world. With her passport now restored under these terms, she can finally chase those international opportunities while staying accountable to the legal process.
