‘Brady Bunch’ star Maureen McCormick shares key to successful 40-year Hollywood marriage

Maureen McCormick, the actress best known as Marcia Brady from “The Brady Bunch,” just marked her 40th wedding anniversary with husband Michael Cummings. The couple, who’s been together since the 1980s, shared some straightforward advice for keeping love strong amid Hollywood’s pressures.

“You’ve got to have a sense of humor about things,” Cummings told People magazine at a recent gala in Los Angeles for The John Ritter Foundation. “You can’t take things too seriously. You’ve got to let things go and just love the one you’re with. It’s a lifetime deal.”

McCormick agreed, adding that celebrating their differences has been key. The pair knew right away they were meant to be. “Ever since I was little, I wanted to get married and find somebody,” said the 69-year-old star. They met at a concert, locked eyes, and that was it—she felt he was the one.

What made it even better? Cummings had no clue about her fame. “I didn’t know who she was, but I liked what I saw,” he recalled. “I saw those eyes and just fell in love.” McCormick found that refreshing. “He had no preconceived ideas about who I was,” she said. “It was really wonderful.”

They tied the knot in 1985 and welcomed daughter Natalie Michelle Cummings in 1989. Over the decades, the family has come first, no matter the spotlight. “Honestly, we haven’t stopped celebrating [our anniversary], because it’s taken a lot of work to be in this place,” McCormick shared. “It’s better than ever. We feel very grateful and thankful to have found each other.”

Fans remember McCormick from her five seasons on “The Brady Bunch” from 1969 to 1974. She brought Marcia back in spinoffs and movies, and later guest-starred on hits like “The Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island.” In 2016, she even danced her way onto “Dancing with the Stars.”

But life after the show got tough. McCormick opened up about her 40-plus years of sobriety in a 2024 interview with Us Weekly, calling herself “incredibly lucky” to have overcome drug addiction and bulimia that hit hard when “The Brady Bunch” wrapped.

“It’s not easy in the beginning at all, but it gets better every day,” she said. Sobriety “has been everything to me.” She credits Cummings big time, along with her family and friends, for pulling her through. In February, she posted on Instagram calling him her “forever Valentine.”

Her struggles were raw. In her 2008 memoir “Here’s the Story,” McCormick described a five-year cocaine battle that nearly destroyed her. “I had played Marcia Brady for five years. But I wasn’t her in any way, shape or form. She was perfect. I was anything but that,” she wrote.

She spiraled into Hollywood’s party scene, trading her career and health for highs that kept her up for days. Her parents almost called the cops on her, as she admitted in a 2018 Us Weekly chat. “They had been trying for years and knew something was going on,” she said. “I was pretty sneaky.”

Cummings drew the line after her last relapse. “He came to me and said, ‘If you ever do this drug again, I’m gone, I’m leaving,’” McCormick remembered. That tough love woke her up. “There’s just no way I’m gonna lose somebody that I love.”

Today, she’s thriving. “I’m so happy to be sober and to be really clear and comfortable in my skin,” she said. “I feel very blessed to have him in my life.” For anyone searching for lasting marriage secrets from a Brady Bunch icon or inspiration from McCormick’s sobriety journey, their story shows humor, support, and letting go can build a love that lasts.
