Can Johnny Depp really make a Hollywood comeback? Fallen star in talks for first major studio film in years

Johnny Depp is reportedly in final talks to play Ebenezer Scrooge in Paramount’s upcoming “Christmas Carol” movie—a role that could signal a major comeback for the once‑prominent actor.

The project is being directed by Ti West, known for horror films such as “The Conjuring” and “The Last Rites,” and the new version is expected to blend classic Charles Dickens with a ghost‑story thriller vibe rather than a family‑friendly Christmas feel.

If the deal closes, it will mark Depp’s first big‑studio release in more than seven years. His last high‑profile role was in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” a Warner Bros. film that ended when he was let go after a 2020 lawsuit against the Sun newspaper.

That case, and the highly publicized defamation trial against former wife Amber Heard, left Depp’s career stalled and his reputation in Hollywood hard hit.

The Hollywood industry has largely turned its back on Depp, with big franchises like “Pirates of the Caribbean” and Disney projects shutting the door. Now, a horror spin on a holiday classic could be the safest way for him to get back on the big screen.

His earlier work in movies like “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “The Corpse Bride” shows he can comfortably handle the spooky, tense atmosphere of a ghost story.

Depp’s current audience is largely older, and his star power has dimmed compared to other aging icons like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Still, fans of his darker, genre‑driven roles love his quirky, theatrical style. If “Ebeneezer : A Christmas Carol” hits theatres in November, it could be the chance for Depp to re‑establish himself in a genre that once made him a cult favourite.

Will the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come deliver him a career‑renewing spotlight, or will the chapter end with a quiet exit? Only time—and a full‑throttle film release—will tell.
