Madhya Pradesh’s health minister says the state’s handling of the child‑death case linked to a contaminated cough syrup is far better than Tamil Nadu’s.
On Wednesday, Narendra Shivaji Patel told that he and his cabinet are fully covering the hospital bills for the sick children and that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is watching the case closely.
Patel pointed out that most medicines sold outside a state must be inspected there before they leave. “The factory that made the cough syrup is in Tamil Nadu, so the Tamil Nadu government is responsible,” he said.
He said the Madhya Pradesh team is writing a formal letter to Tamil Nadu officials, requesting details on how the suspect medicine got out of the state. Police have already filed an FIR and are planning to arrest the owners of the Tamil Nadu company.
When asked about calls for his resignation, Patel joked that if stepping down solved the problem he would do it right away.
Congress leader Digvijaya Singh blasted the Madhya Pradesh government for its “complete failure.” He said drug inspectors should have tested medicine samples every month and that corruption let the unsafe product slip through.
The controversy over the cough‑syrup deaths is drawing national attention to drug safety protocols and the accountability of state governments in India.
