A New York federal judge has shot down Sean “Diddy” Combs’ bid for a new trial or acquittal in his high-profile sex trafficking case. The ruling comes just days before Diddy’s sentencing on Friday, keeping the spotlight on the disgraced rapper’s legal troubles.
Judge Arun Subramanian made it clear in a recent court filing that he wasn’t convinced by the defense team’s arguments. Diddy’s lawyers had pushed hard, claiming that videos of him with male escorts counted as amateur pornography protected by the First Amendment. They also argued for a retrial, saying the jury got unfairly influenced because the RICO conspiracy and sex trafficking charges were bundled with Mann Act violations—federal rules against transporting people for prostitution.
But Subramanian wasn’t buying it. He pointed out that Diddy beat the bigger RICO and sex trafficking counts, so there was no real “spillover prejudice” from mixing the charges. “The government proved its case many times over,” the judge wrote. He added that if prejudice had been that bad, the jury likely would have convicted on the serious stuff first. Bottom line: No new trial needed.
Prosecutors aren’t letting up. On Monday, they dropped a hefty 164-page memo urging at least 11 years behind bars for Diddy. They described him as “unrepentant” and stressed that his sentence should reflect the brutal way he carried out the crimes he’s convicted on—like the two prostitution-related transportation counts.
This marks a shift from the government’s earlier push for just four to five years. Diddy’s team fired back last week, asking for no more than 14 months. They say he’s suffered enough already through the trial and public scrutiny. To back their plea, they included support letters from Diddy’s ex, Yung Miami, producer Dallas Austin, and even some inmates who’ve taken classes he taught.
As Diddy heads into sentencing, fans and critics alike are watching closely. The case has drawn massive attention, from the rapper’s celebrity ties to the serious allegations of abuse and exploitation that rocked the music world.
