In Mumbai on Sunday, veteran actor Dalip Tahil watched the funeral of his longtime friend and fellow actor Satish Shah at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle West.
Tahil said the two began acting together in the 1960s and shared many stage and screen moments. “It’s a very, very sad day,” he told reporters. “I can’t describe Satish. He’s been with us since the start of my career. When I came to Mumbai, we were both in theatre, and I’ve enjoyed many days with him. He was an amazing person.”
He added that Satish was always positive and that he had not spoken to him in a month and a half because of his recent kidney transplant. “I wanted to call him when I was out, but the news came in the morning and I didn’t get to talk,” Tahil said.
The funeral drew a who’s‑who of the Indian film and TV world. Actors Ratna Pathak Shah, her husband Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Supriya Pathak, Deepak Parashar, Nani Mukesh, Avatar Gill, filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, Rumi Jaffery, and director‑actor David Dhawan were among the mourners.
Satish Shah, 74, left a lasting mark on Indian entertainment. His career spanned over four decades, with iconic roles in films such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Main Hoon Na, and Om Shanti Om. On television he thrilled audiences in Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi and later as the eccentric Indravadan Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai.
Known for his impeccable comic timing and heartfelt performances, Shah remains one of India’s most beloved character actors. His passing is deeply felt across the industry and among fans worldwide.
