Veteran actress Deepti Naval has been a shining star in India’s indie cinema scene for nearly five decades. She’s watched Bollywood evolve hand-in-hand with society’s shifts, from gritty indie films to today’s high-tech blockbusters.
While promoting her upcoming movie Tara and Akash: Love Beyond Realms, Deepti chatted with about the big changes in Hindi cinema since her early days. She loves how films now boast stunning visuals that match global standards. "Our movies look and feel as polished as international ones," she said. "Technicians and actors alike bring top-notch skills—everyone trains hard these days. You can’t just walk in and start acting like I did back then. The new generation stays laser-focused on their dreams, and they’re all in."
Deepti praised her young co-stars Jitesh and Alankrita, calling them inspiring examples of that drive. She also gave a shoutout to the director for his passion. "Cinema has transformed so much from my starting years," she added. "The energy and commitment today really motivate me."
That said, Deepti isn’t all praise—she spots some downsides in modern Hindi films. Content quality sometimes takes a hit, with big budgets spent on flashy nothingburgers. "Not every change is for the better," she noted. "We’ve lost a bit in storytelling depth. But overall, Indian cinema has leaped forward in ways I never imagined."
Fans have more to look forward to with Tara and Akash: Love Beyond Realms. The film grabbed attention at Film Bazaar and won a key co-production deal with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) at IFFI Goa 2023. It also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) market in 2024. Mark your calendars: it hits theaters on September 26, 2025.
