Exciting news from the world of cinema: South Korean director Deok Noh is taking the helm for the Korean remake of the blockbuster Indian thriller Drishyam. She joins the project to bring a fresh twist to this gripping story of family secrets and suspense.
Choi Jae-won, president of Korea Anthology Studios, spilled the details during a chat with Variety at the Busan Asian Contents & Film Market. The remake comes from a collaboration between Panorama Studios—led by producers Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak—and Anthology Studios. The latter was founded by Choi himself (also known as Jay Choi, ex-Warner Bros. Korea production head), Parasite star Song Kang-ho, and director Kim Jee-woon.
Deok Noh has built an impressive career in Korean films and TV. She first grabbed attention with her 2013 romantic comedy Very Ordinary Couple, which snagged the Asian New Talent Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival. She then shifted gears to thrillers with the 2015 newsroom drama The Exclusive: Beat the Devil’s Tattoo. More recently, Noh dove into sci-fi with the 2020 anthology series SF8 and helmed the 2022 Netflix mystery show Glitch.
The original Drishyam hit screens in 2013 as a Malayalam-language film. Jeetu Joseph wrote and directed it, with Mohanlal leading the cast in a tale that captivated audiences worldwide. Its massive success sparked remakes across India and beyond: the Kannada version Drishya in 2014 starring Ravichandran, Telugu’s Drushyam in 2014 with Venkatesh, Tamil hit Papanasam in 2015 featuring Kamal Haasan, Hindi Drishyam in 2015 led by Ajay Devgn, and even a Sinhala adaptation called Dharmayuddhaya in 2017 with Jackson Anthony.
Fans of Drishyam and Korean cinema can’t wait to see how Noh reimagines this edge-of-your-seat thriller.
