On Wednesday, police in West Bengal’s East Burdwan district arrested a man accused of killing a tea‑shop owner after a heated argument over a biscuit.
The violence erupted on Nov. 4 in the Khalerpool area of Raina town. Farid Ali Sheikh, 50, who ran a small tea stall in the village of Machkhanda, was serving a regular customer, Hossain Mollah, a mason who often visited the shop. Mollah asked for a biscuit, which Sheikh handed him. When Mollah complained that the biscuit “tasted bad,” the shopkeeper and the customer started arguing. Other patrons tried to calm the situation, but that was only a prelude to the attack that followed.
Later that morning, Mollah returned to the stall, armed with a bamboo stick. He struck Sheikh repeatedly, leaving the tea seller badly injured before anyone could intervene. Sheikh was rushed to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital and then transferred to a nearby facility near Nawabhat, but he died on Wednesday morning during treatment.
Mollah’s son, Sheikh Syed Ahmed, told police that his father often drank tea at his father’s stall but never paid. “On Tuesday, Mollah left without paying and then shouted about a biscuit,” he said. “After the locals helped settle the debt, he came back with a stick and hit my father on the head.”
Police acted on the family’s complaint and have now arrested Mollah. An autopsy will be performed on Sheikh’s body, and investigators will continue to probe the case.
This incident highlights growing concerns over small‑business security in rural West Bengal and the risks that casual disputes can quickly turn violent. The local authorities are urging residents to report any threats promptly to prevent similar tragedies.
