Diane Keaton, the beloved Hollywood actress known for her iconic roles and Oscar‑winning career, died in California on Saturday at the age of 79. Her family confirmed the news, but the cause of death was not released.
Just a month before she passed, Keaton was seen at a familiar party—Jack Nicholson’s birthday celebration. “I saw her fairly recently at Jack Nicholson’s birthday party, and it was good to see her there,” said Ed Begley Jr., a fellow co‑star from the TV movie Running Mates. Begley, 76, added that the late actress “loved Jack Nicholson, as I do,” and that he believes Nicholson feels just as devastated by her loss.
Keaton and Nicholson had shared a film‑making partnership for years, most famously in the late‐2003 rom‑com Something’s Gotta Give, directed by Nancy Meyers. The picture followed two seasoned professionals who discover romance in later life. In her 2011 memoir, Then Again, Keaton admitted the project seemed doomed at first, but it ultimately became one of her favorite movies. She also revealed that Nicholson shared his box‑office cut with her—a gesture she said she had never expected.
Meyers also paid tribute to the late actress on Instagram, describing Keaton as a fearless, beautiful friend who “changed my life.” “Her laugh could light up a room; I’ll miss her forever,” the director wrote.
Friends from the silver screen celebrated Keaton’s legacy after her death. Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, Steve Martin, Mandy Moore, Woody Allen, and Leonardo DiCaprio, among others, posted messages honoring her talent and spirit.
Keaton’s final public appearance was in late 2024, when she joined a holiday shopping trip with friends. Reports say her health “declined very suddenly,” and she lost significant weight in the months leading up to her death. Family members said the loss came as a shock to everyone who knew her.
As the Hollywood community reflects on a career that spanned more than half a century, Diane Keaton will be remembered for her unforgettable performances, her distinctive style, and the warmth she brought both on and off the screen.
